Obverse, left-facing portrait of Queen Victoria with the inscription “VICTORIA REGINA”.
Reverse, image of British soldiers fighting Africans in dense jungle. The design, by Sir Edward Poynter, was also used on the reverses of the Ashantee Medal and the Central Africa Medal.
Ashantee Medal, with clasp, ” Gambia, 1894,” awarded to those from the undermentioned ships who formed part of the expedition against Chief Fodi Selah between 22nd February and llth March, 1894 :—
H.M. Ships Alecto, Magpie, Raleigh, Satellite, and Widgeon.
The clasp only is awarded to any who received the medal for former operations.
