Hammered Half Crown

Half Crown

The half crown was equivalent to two shillings and sixpence, or one-eighth of a pound.

The half crown was first issued in 1551 and was, together with the crown, the first coins to have numerals showing the year when they were issued. Interestingly, the dating of coin only lasted 2 years, before coins returned to using mint marks (symbols) such as crowns or anchors. Dates then returned to coins during the period of the Commonwealth.
