COGNOSCERE CAVSAS (“It makes one happy to know causes”), in exergue M.DCC.XXVI. Dated in the old style. Besides being a natural philosopher and mathematician best known for his Principia Mathematica, Newton also served as Master of the Royal Mint from 1699 until his death in 1727.
