Obverse, reads Henricus Rex. During the reign of Henry II, his short-cross penny, which is a feature of the reverse design, was first issued in 1180, this design remained unchanged—including the name Henricus—not only by Henry II but also by Richard and John and Henry III until 1247. Then during the reign of Henry III, the long-cross penny was introduced, with the arms of the cross extended to the edge of the coin to discourage clipping.
