Victoria (1837-1901), Gothic Florin, 1870, Queen in crown and decorated dress facing left legend in Gothic script. Die Number 20 below bust and WW
Reverse. crowned cruciform shields, emblems in angles, edge milled (S.3893; ESC. 836; Bull. 2870).
Underlying hints of golden tones.
The first florin introduced was part of an new coinage experiment, decimalisation that didn’t progress. The original florins, dated 1849, omitted the reference to God from the Queen’s title and therefore attracted the name “Godless florin”, and was in 1851 succeeded by the “Gothic florin”, for its design and style of lettering.
